Preparation: You are going to need a box of large garbage bags and a bunch of cardboard boxes. You will also need a few laundry baskets, a permanent marker and some gardening or work gloves for everyone in your party. Wear sturdy shoes and comfortable clothes.

Step One:

Assign each person a garbage bag, two cardboard boxes and a laundry basket. One box should be labeled, “donate,” and the other should be labeled, “garage sale.” (If you do not plan on having a garage sale, then eliminate this box!) Items that are to be thrown out will go in the trash bag, and those that need to be relocated elsewhere in the garage (or in the house!) will go in the laundry basket. Also assign each person a section of the garage to start with.

Step Two:

Begin placing items in your section in their appropriate containers. It’s best to start with a garage storage unit; this way, as shelves and surfaces are cleared, you’ll have room to begin putting things back where they belong. If motivation seems non-existent or if you have older kids or teens helping you, it might be best to set a timer. Work as fast as you can for 20-30 minutes, then take a break.

Step Three:

Deal with full containers right away. Bags of garbage should go to the dumpster, garbage can or curb. Boxes of items to be donated need to be sealed up and placed in the trunk of your car. Boxes of garage sale items can go in the center of the garage or out in the driveway for now. Those in the laundry baskets will likely have to wait at this point; if they’re too full and you need more room, you can switch to boxes, but make sure you keep them separated from the ones that will be transported to the thrift shop later!

Step Four:

Switch locations periodically. If you’re getting antsy in the section of the garage where all of the tools have been tossed, feel free to switch with the person who has been dealing with all of the wood scraps for a while! If you’re working alone or with just one other person, move from place to place, but use caution so you don’t make a big mess, only to leave it to deal with later. Remember to keep those filled containers moving out of the garage regularly. Also, as surfaces get cleared out, you can start putting back some of the items in the baskets to reduce your workload later.

Step Five:

Sweep up and put everything away. Once all of the junk is out of the garage, give the garage flooring a good sweeping. (Sweep the dust and cobwebs off of the walls while you have the broom out.) Put away whatever is left in the baskets, and find a corner to stash the garage sale items. Choose a date for the garage sale and circle it in red on your calendar. Make a plan to drop off the thrift store items as soon as possible. In other words, don’t let this garage clutter hang around!

With regular maintenance and proper garage organizers, like wall shelving and garage cabinets , you should not have to do a big clean-out like this again for a very long time. Every month or so, go through your garage and remove junk to keep it in good shape.

Nail It!

Storing your mops, brooms, shovels, gardening tools and more is as easy as pounding a few nails in the wall. Use a wall that you aren’t using for shelving, and use nails or pick up some hooks the next time you’re out. Simply hang these items on the wall to keep them off of the flat surfaces of your garage. For light items, you can use pegboard, but that probably isn’t strong enough for heavier hangables.

If you are a homeowner, you probably take home security very seriously. Close the garage door

Make sure your service entry is secure

The side door on your garage should be locked up just as well as your front door. If it doesn’t currently have a kickplate and deadbolt, add them. Because this door is not front-and-center when a passerby is looking at your house, it can be a convenient place for an intruder to try to gain access to your home. While you’re at it, beef up the door leading from the garage into your house. If someone were to break into your garage, having a heavy door between him or her and your family will buy you some time.

Light up your outside area

A light left on all night is less noticeable than one that turns on with motion, and motion detectors save electricity, too. Fires, of course, can occur at any time of year, and in many cases, they’re more of a hazard in the winter. As we head into spring, however, it’s a good idea to review basic fire safety so that you can go through your home and garage to eliminate any hazards. Here are some tips:

Keep common sense in mind

When it comes to garage fires, many of them can be prevented in the same way that you would prevent fires that start in any other area of your home. Here are some common-sense ways to prevent fires from Closet Designs and More include making sure that you have a fire extinguisher on hand, being careful with wood-burning stoves and not overloading circuits, whether in the house or in the garage.

Keep combustibles stored safely

The garage is typically the area where the most hazardous fluids are kept. How to Safely Heat Your Garage

Winter is here, and many areas of the country are experiencing frigid cold temperatures . When the weather outside is frightful, it can be difficult to use any unheated part of your home. In most homes, the garage is not heated. What this means is that you aren’t able to use this space as a child’s playspace, a workshop or anything else when Old Man Winter comes blowing in. The good news, though, is that there are ways to safely heat your garage. Here are some of them:

Add insulation

No matter what type of heating system you decide to use, if your garage is uninsulated (or barely so), all of the warm air that you create is going to seep right out. The solution to this is to install some insulation. You can buy fiberglass insulation and roll it right around the perimeter of your garage. Cover it with drywall or paneling to hold it in place. You can also purchase an insulated garage door. These measures alone will make a huge difference in how warm your garage stays on cold days. As a side benefit, good insulation will help your garage from getting too hot on summer days, too.

Use an electric space heater

If you aren’t going to be spending a lot of time in your garage, an electric space heater or two can be all that you need to keep your newly insulated garage toasty warm. You could go with baseboard heaters or simply get the type that stands alone. You should not leave a standing space heater unattended, and it’s important to get the type that will shut off on its own when knocked over, particularly if you have children or pets. You won’t want to leave the baseboard type on for a long period of time, either, mostly because they will use up a lot of electricity.

Use a forced-air gas heater

This is a special type of heater that is sold specifically for garages. You will likely need someone to help you install this unless you are exceptionally handy, because you’ll need to vent it outside, and you’ll also need a fuel source (natural gas or propane) as well as electrical access. These are very good at getting your garage nice and warm, but be forewarned that as the name would imply, they do blow air. This means that if you’re working on anything dusty or painting, it might not be the best system for you.

Of course, there are other ways to heat your garage, including extending your HVAC system to include the garage, and having solar panels installed. If you are going to be using your garage a lot in the winter, then these are options worth looking into. Put down some flooring

If you have young children , your house is likely child-proofed. This may or may not extend to the garage, and if it doesn’t, then you probably don’t let them in that area unattended. We often forget about the need for pet-proofing, however, and every year many pets get injured or sick in the garage. Here are some garage safety tips that you should think about in order to keep Fido and Fluffy safe and sound if they venture into your garage:

Be particularly careful with antifreeze

While most chemicals taste bad and will deter pets, antifreeze is an exception. Its sweet smell and taste lure cats and dogs in, and they might lap up any that is dripping in the garage or left laying around. Unfortunately, antifreeze is also very toxic, and can cause kidney problems and death, even in small amounts. Keep this chemical away from your pets. If you think that your cat or dog has accidentally gotten into it, this is a reason to head to the veterinarian immediately, even if it’s a weekend or at night and you have to go to the emergency vet. Do not induce vomiting; just drive to the nearest veterinarian. With this type of poisoning, every minute counts, so don’t delay. You can buy pet-safe antifreeze. Ask your vet which brands are pet-safe, or check the labels. (These are still toxic and should be kept away from your pets, but they are much less likely to cause severe illness or death.)

Protect your pets from carbon monoxide

Cats and dogs are more susceptible than humans to carbon monoxide poisoning. For your family’s safety, you should have carbon monoxide detectors in your sleeping areas, as well as in your garage, and you should never leave a vehicle running in the garage for any length of time. In some cases, though, your pets can be affected by CO levels that are lower than what might set off an alarm. Some symptoms include weakness, shaky legs and red mucus membranes, such as around the eyes and in the mouth. If you notice these symptoms in your pet, get him outside in the fresh air right away, and if he hasn’t recovered in a few minutes, head to the veterinarian right away.

Watch out for the garage door

A garage door can crush a small dog or a cat if they try to dart underneath it when it’s being closed. The sensor that detects a person walking under the door might be set too high to be triggered by your pet. Your garage door should go back up if it encounters any resistance. One way to check this is to place a roll of paper towels on its side under the open garage door, then shut the door. Use good sense when using ladders

Whenever you climb a ladder, you’re putting yourself at risk of a fall. Even a short fall of a few feet can lead to broken bones or worse, so it’s important to be careful every time you use a ladder. Make sure that you’re wearing sturdy, non-skid footwear, and don’t use the ladder outdoors in windy, stormy or snowy weather. If the ladder is old and rickety, don’t use it. Set it up on flat ground, and don’t stand on the top step or rung. If you need to stand on the top rung, then you’re not using a large enough ladder; go back in and get a taller one. How to Clean Your Garage Floor

If you have a concrete garage floor , you might notice at some point that it’s gotten very stained. Concrete tends to absorb oils and other liquids that you might use in the garage, so it can be difficult to clean. Many homeowners prefer to switch over to polyaspartic flooring and other coatings in the garage, as they can simply be swept, mopped or hosed down. If your garage floor is concrete, however, there are some things that you can do to make it look cleaner.

1. Clear out the garage and sweep the floor

Sweeping is your first line of defense, because you don’t want to be adding anything to the dirt that is already sitting on the floor. Just use a stiff broom and sweep it out of there.

2. Apply something absorbent to oily stains

You might have heard the tip about sprinkling kitty litter on a fresh oil spill in your garage. Even if you have old oil stains, though, this can make a difference. Use the non-clumping variety. If you don’t have kitty litter, you can substitute sawdust or cornmeal. Simply pour it on any oil stains and let them sit for several hours or overnight. Sweep it up. If much of it seems saturated, repeat this step.

3. Vacuum up any leftover residue

You’ll want to be sure to get any remnants of cat litter or sawdust off of the floor before beginning the next step.

4. Scrub the floors

This step is probably the most labor-intensive. Start with something mild, like dishwashing liquid and water, to scrub the floors with a scrub brush. Rinse that off, let it dry, and assess the situation. You might need to get a degreaser to remove any lingering or tough stains. Another option is to use a power washer on the floor. Whatever use decide to use, rinse it well.

5. Consider having the garage floor coated

You can do this yourself or you can hire the professionals to do it. Epoxy coating is a great option for those wanting a relatively maintenance-free garage flooring option.

6. Keep it clean

From now on, if you spill anything oily, greasy or sudsy, clean it up right away. Treating a fresh stain is usually easier than trying to remove oil that is months or years old. Also, keeping up with this type of maintenance can help prevent falls by reducing any slipperiness.

Fall To-Do List for Your Lawn and Garden

Fall is here! In most parts of North America, the growing season is coming to an end for the winter. If you haven’t already, you’ll soon be able to stop mowing your lawn every week, and your plants will begin to wither for the winter. While it’s still pleasant outdoors and before the ground freezes, there are some things that you should be doing to make your work in the spring less onerous. Here are some tips on completing a fall to-do list for your lawn and garden:

Divide and cut back your perennials

As the last blooms on your lilies, asters, coneflowers and black-eyed susans die back, it’s time to cut them. You can cut to the main stalk or to the ground, but either way, you won’t have to watch them turn brown and wither away into lifeless sticks. Before the first frost, while they’re still alive, is also the time to divide them, if you’re hoping to move some of the blooms to other areas of your garden. Don’t worry; they’ll be back next year! (You can leave your sunflowers instead of cutting them back, as birds will be happy to eat the leftover seeds.)

Plant bulbs for your early blooms

If you are looking forward to seeing more crocuses peeking up through the snow than you had last year, now is the time to plant those bulbs. You can also plant hyacinths, tulips and irises. All of these will bloom in the early to mid-spring, bringing a welcome pop of color as the winter wears away. You can also plant most trees and shrubs now; ask at your local nursery to find out whether it’s a good time to plant the trees that you want to add to your landscape.

Lay down mulch

Ideally, you’ll put down about three inches of new mulch in your garden beds. This will help retain moisture in the garden, and it will also protect plant roots and the bulbs that you put down. Even better, mulch will reduce the amount of weeding that you’ll have to do once spring comes.

Rake your leaves

This chore is one that many people put off, but if you put it off too long, you’ll find yourself dealing with a frozen, muddy mess of rotted leaves every time the snow melts all winter long. Just get it done now. It’s best to rake once right after the bulk of the leaves fall, in case of an early snow, then again later in the season, when there are almost no leaves on the trees.

Winterize your hose and irrigation system

Before your area is scheduled for its first freeze, water the garden one last time, then turn off your spigots and drain hoses and irrigation systems. If possible, store your rolled-up hoses in the shed, basement or garage to protect them from the elements.

You’ve likely been going through your home and trying to reduce clutter accumulated over the past year or so in order to prepare for the upcoming winter. The garage might be a mishmash of summertime sports equipment and other items that you are ready to part with. One way to tame your clutter monster while making some money is to have a garage sale. If you’ve never had one before, or if it’s been a while, you might not know where to start. Here are some tips on having a successful fall garage sale:

Choose your date wisely

You’ll want to hold your garage sale before it gets too cold. People tend not to want to go yard-saling when they have to wear hats and gloves, or when the streets might be icy with frost, so choose a weekend in advance of the first freeze, if possible. Another consideration is to think about what’s going on in your area each weekend. If there is a big county fair one weekend or there is a three-day weekend (such as for Columbus Day or Veteran’s Day), it might be better to avoid those times, as people tend to travel. Usually garage sales are best held over two days, on Friday and Saturday, or on Saturday and Sunday. If you can only have it on one day, choose the one that makes more sense to you, based on your own obligations and what most people in your area do.

Allowing the moisture of winter to take hold of your garage can cause damage to your belongings that you are storing out there. Even your car will appreciate not being subject to the elements while residing cozily in your garage. Here are some tips on getting the garage ready for winter:

Give it a good cleaning

Between the dirt from the comings and goings of summer, any hardy insects that have wriggled their way in out of the cold, and the leaves and mulch that will get tracked in this fall, before winter hits, you’ll need to give your garage a good cleaning. Pull everything away from the walls and use a stiff broom to sweep out any dirt. Also, hit down any cobwebs on the walls and ceilings. Install weather stripping

Seal the bottom of the door

You can buy a special gasket for this, or you can have a piece of foam rubber or vinyl installed on the bottom of the door. This will not only keep out drafts during the winter, but will help discourage tiny critters, particularly of the six- and eight-legged varieties, from wandering in all year long.

Take care of any cracks and holes

Some areas of your garage aren’t normally sealed. These might be around electrical outlets or the dryer vent. Go around the garage with a caulking gun and fill in any areas that are allowing cold air and moisture in.

Think about heat

It’s a good idea to periodically go through our emergency supplies to be sure that we have everything that we need in case of severe inclement weather, a fire, a problem with the local water supply, or any other type of emergency. Of course, there are some people out there, and very likely some even reading this article, who do not have an emergency stash of supplies to go through! If that is the case with you, don’t worry! It’s never too late to get started, unless you’re actually in the midst of an emergency. Starting right now, begin to assemble the supplies that you need. Whether you are starting your kit for the first time or you are planning on going through your stash, here are some tips on what you need to gather:

Water

Water is probably the most important emergency-stash item. Figure that you need roughly one gallon per person, per day. Most experts recommend having enough bottled water on hand for three days. If you have a baby or if you are pregnant or have health issues, it might be a better idea to plan for five to seven days. Don’t forget about pets, either; stash a couple of gallons for them, as well.

Food

Obviously, you’re going to need to eat during your emergency. High-protein, non-perishable foods that don’t need to be heated up are the best ones to choose. Gather up crackers, peanut butter, canned tuna fish, canned baked beans and other items that will be able to be stored for a while. Go ahead and buy some canned soups and the orange spaghetti that kids love, as well. Anyone with special diets will need his or her special food, and keep an extra can of baby formula on hand if you have an infant. This even applies if you have a nursing infant, because if for some reason mom is unavailable or can’t nurse, it could prove to be a lifesaver! Include pet food in this stash.

Medication

Always keep a supply of medication on hand for anyone who needs it. This applies to prescription, as well as over-the-counter, meds. Since medications can become ineffective or even dangerous once expired, rotate and replenish any surplus regularly.

Hygiene

Supplies In your kit, include a toothbrush for each person, a tube of toothpaste, tissues, toilet paper, soap, washcloths, deodorant, shampoo and other everyday hygiene items. The small sample-sized quantities that you get at hotels are great to include in your kit. Pack feminine hygiene supplies, diapers, diaper rash creams and other items that might be required, as well.

Once you have your items assembled, keep them in a large basket or box in your garage or pantry. In the case of an emergency that allows you to stay home, you’ll have the supplies necessary. If you need to evacuate, you’ll be able to simply grab the box or basket (plus the gallons of water) and put it in the trunk. Every season, go through the items in order to take out and use up what might be getting close to expiration, then replenish as necessary.

With any luck, you won’t need to use the items in your emergency supply stash. If the worst should occur, however, you’ll at least be able to feel secure that you have everything that you need.

If there’s one place in your home that tends to attract critters of all kinds , it’s probably your garage. Improper sealing, the storage of the garbage cans, and piles of clutter can all lead to infestation of creepy crawlies that you’d rather not share your space with, including insects, spiders, rodents and snakes. Thankfully, there are things you can do to keep your garage pest-free. Whether you’re currently dealing with an infestation or just hoping to prevent the problem altogether, here are some tips on having a pest-free garage:

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Surely you’ve heard this adage before! It’s much easier to stop insects and other pests from getting into the garage in the first place than it is to evict them once they’ve made themselves comfortable. So walk around your garage and make note of any spaces that they might use to gain entry. Seal up any cracks and crevices, including those around the dryer vent and garage door. If you have piles of cardboard or other debris, clean it up; piles give bugs and rodents a place to nest. When you notice spiderwebs or wasp nests near the garage, knock them down or otherwise remove them. This is something that you’ll need to keep an eye on throughout the year.

Make your garbage less pest-friendly

Try natural repellants

If you see an occasional critter wandering through your garage, you might be able to simply use natural repellants to encourage them to keep on moving. To repel ants, try wiping surfaces with vinegar; they don’t like the scent, plus it erases their scent trails. You could also try drawing a heavy chalk line along the edge of your garage; usually, ants won’t want to cross the line and will keep marching without entering. If you don’t have chalk, try cinnamon, coffee grounds or mint. Bay leaves will repel many types of insects, including cockroaches. Small rodents don’t like peppermint and cloves, so try peppermint oil on cotton balls or whole or ground cloves in various areas of the garage.

Try store-bought solutions

Again, if the problem is not very bad, you might have good luck with any of a number of store-bought traps or bait. You can buy ant or cockroach bait stations that will eventually kill the critters. You can also spray around the outside perimeter of your house with a wide-spectrum insect killer; these often cause creepy-crawlies to die before they can cross the barrier. For an occasional mouse, you might want to try rodent poison (if you don’t have pets that will get into it!) or a mouse trap.

Call in the professionals

When you have a true infestation or you have tried the above remedies without success, it’s time to defer to the professionals. Professional exterminators have access to safe and effective poisons and baits that will eliminate your problem. It is often a good idea to sign up for a yearly contract, where the company will come several times per year on schedule, and in between if you see a pest in your garage in the meantime.

Keeping your garage pest-free is not only possible, but essential for good health and cleanliness. Some pests harbor diseases that you don’t want to be exposing your children and pets to, and most of them are just not very pleasant to have around.
